Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
