Chelsea's Boss Maresca Calls Lead-Up Time as His 'Toughest Two Days' with the Blues

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to the weekend's victory against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian offered a rather mysterious statement in his post-match interview despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to consecutive fixtures.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and overall performance, Maresca unexpectedly shared his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"The way the lads want to improve has been superb and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with a host of issues, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because many people withheld support from us."

When pushed further on what he meant, the former Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Fitness and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's success over Everton strengthened their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous who or what caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if social media comments were a factor, or if it was something deeper from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
