A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be intentional gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the site and a third person who escaped after the incident was found not long after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
