Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He commented in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await following their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the official communicated with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it respected his choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This news follows after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a bill that would compel the US justice department to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will afterward head to the office of the White House for approval. The President has stated he expects to sign the legislation, after changing his view on the subject following objections from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-connected messages made public by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with he often trying to link the academic to influential global figures.

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided decision to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to restore confidence and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on this week, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in DC where the professor was a researcher, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the institution.
