Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits Following Shift Towards Fried Chicken.

A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit peak pizza while expanding the franchise into fried chicken has been removed after tensions with its directors.

Executive Change

Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a new leader.

Rennie, who was with Domino's for a substantial period, had attempted to pivot the UK's leading pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, commenting earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the quickest rising food category in the world.

Board Disagreements

Sources suggest that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his focus and direction, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.

Recent Brand Launch

In September, Domino's unveiled its poultry brand – which Rennie referred to as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.

While the business is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it views fried chicken as complementary to its core pizza business.

Board Comment

Ian Bull, the company chair, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said transactions declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the government announcement and higher payroll outlays for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the shutting of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets entered insolvency.

Health Initiatives

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards healthier eating, the company has launched light items, such as its thin-crust line of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and wheat-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.

Interim Management

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to take on the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a number of active development and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”

Frampton noted these involved additional efforts on the company's logistics network and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also lacking a long-term finance director until 16 March, when Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Snow acts as acting financial officer.
