I Was So Ill I Couldn’t Walk When a Man Practically Supported Me to a Restroom.

At the age of 19 years old, my regular journey to work was on an packed public transport. The vehicle was always full and would always be completely full when I stepped aboard.

On one specific day, I was feeling incredibly sick when the coach swayed around each corner. I repeatedly told myself to hold on just a little longer before the bus got to my stop, and then I could sprint quickly toward the most convenient public toilet to throw up.

The bus was approaching the street towards my stop and I realised I would not be to hold on. All of a sudden, it was like a curtain fell over me. My vision turned white and really quiet; as if someone muted everything. I said to myself, “I am about to pass out”.

Fortunately, I stood toward the front on the bus, so I managed a couple of steps toward the driver and asked the driver to pull over, explaining to him that I was about to be sick. He opened the entrance and I stumbled out on to the pavement.

I was determined to not get sick in front of a busy multi-lane road, so I picked myself up and started trying to make my way to the park on the other side, where I believed I’d at least be able to secretly conceal myself behind a bush to be sick. But then I must have blacked out. I sensed my physical self, yet walking was impossible and my vision was blurry, leading me to start inching my way to the grassy area.

“Everything alright, love?”

In that instant, I was lifted up. There was someone holding me and a stranger inquired, “You right, love?” I told this mysterious stranger that I required to be sick. So he virtually supported my weight into an adjacent building and put me into the female bathroom. He inquired whether I required him to stay with me but I refused.

A few minutes later, I felt better sufficiently to sit down and from the other side of the stall I heard him ask, “Do you need anything, love? Do you need anything?” I could not to get up right away but I did succeed to thank him and following a brief period was able to move my legs. I made my way home and spent the following days recovering from what was later diagnosed as a nasty tummy bug.

I never glimpsed his features – only his legs along with a sizable metal toolbox he had with him – yet he rescued me, when I was in my weakest state.

Many times, life can make you self-protective, pushy, and rivalrous. His was the sort of gesture that reverses that hardening of the heart. He was proof that our default setting leans toward compassion, something I love about my fellow humans.
