Norris Advances Closer to Title as Max Verstappen Claims Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory
The McLaren driver currently holds a 30-point advantage over fellow driver Oscar Piastri with only fifty-eight points up for grabs in the final two races
The McLaren Lando Norris stepped closer to a maiden world title with runner-up position in the Vegas race behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen
The British driver currently heads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place after Mercedes' George Russell, by thirty points heading to the penultimate race in Qatar next weekend
The Briton will secure the championship in the Qatar as long as he does not lose over five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
Piastri, so impressive in the first half of the season, has failed to finish on the podium for six consecutive events
"Verstappen had a strong performance. I made the mistake at the beginning and was too punchy on that opening corner," stated Norris
"It's still a good result to get second place. I've got to praise Verstappen and his team"
After Qatar, the final race of the championship follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The main developments of one of Formula 1's most high-profile races included:
Lando Norris maintained his momentum towards the championship despite the win to Max Verstappen
Oscar Piastri's challenging performance streak persisted as his championship chances wane
A excellent victory for Max Verstappen to maintain him in the title fight
Fightbacks for both Ferrari drivers, following a difficult qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton claiming a point for 10th following beginning at the rear
Max Verstappen Stays in Title Battle
Verstappen passes Norris at the beginning after the British driver ran wide at the first corner
From the beginning, Lando Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not here to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his lead from pole position from Max Verstappen
However following an forceful move in front of Verstappen to head off the Verstappen's challenge on the inner line, the McLaren driver miscalculated his braking point and went too deep into the turn
This enabled Verstappen to drive past into the lead while the British driver lost second place to George Russell
During two virtual safety cars for several opening-lap incidents, including at the beginning when Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson collided with Piastri, Max Verstappen slowly stamped his authority on the event
George Russell undertook an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Max Verstappen remained on track
The McLaren driver pitted five laps after the Mercedes and Verstappen 10
Verstappen was able to return still in the first place, George Russell having been failed to close in on the Red Bull car even with his newer rubber
Norris returned after George Russell from his pit stop but following a few cautious laps to let his tires to settle, quickly closed his 3.3-second gap to the Mercedes and swept by into second place on the thirty-fourth lap
Norris inquired his race engineer how to run the remainder of his race, effectively asking whether he should accept second or challenge for the lead
He was told to "go and get Max" but it soon became clear he had little opportunity. Verstappen was easily could repel Norris' attacks, and in the final laps the gap extended substantially as the McLaren began to experience a technical issue which has so far remained unidentified
Despite dropping nearly three seconds a circuit, Lando Norris was able to hold off Russell because of the size of the lead he had established while pursuing Verstappen
The Verstappen's sixth victory of the championship - only one less than the two McLaren teammates - was taken in dominant fashion and keeps him in championship contention, at minimum mathematically, although he requires issues for Norris in the final two events to overtake him
"It remains a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize all we've have," Max Verstappen stated
"During the coming events we will attempt to win the event and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will see where we finish, but I'm extremely pleased of the entire team"
'Frustrating Race' for Piastri
Piastri began in fifth but dropped two places on the opening lap after being hit by Liam Lawson, who was soon taken out of the battle by a broken nose section
He trailed Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the first 15 laps before passing him on the Strip but also position to Charles Leclerc, who he was able to overtake again during the tire change phase
The Australian finished behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who competed nearly the whole event on hard tyres following pitting during the initial VSC, but was awarded a five-second time penalty for a starting procedure violation, which was not immediately obvious on video reviews
"It was a disappointing race from pretty much start to finish in certain respects," Oscar Piastri informed BBC Radio 5 Live
Questioned about how he would tackle the remaining events, he said: "Simply try to position myself in the optimal situation I can. I obviously need quite a lot of factors to favor me now to win, but my only option is ensure I'm in the best position to take advantage if circumstances change"
Charles Leclerc held on in sixth place, insufficiently close to benefit from Antonelli's penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh at the flag, his Williams missing the speed to challenge with the top teams in the dry, following his impressive performance to qualify third in the wet
Hadjar took eighth place ahead of the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton
The seven-time title winner executed a strong getaway, rising to thirteenth on the opening circuit and continued to move forwards
He became trapped in a DRS train with a bunch of additional vehicles but was able to employ his electric start to rescue a championship point following the worst qualifying performance of his career
