Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests by Egypt and Iran

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised objections about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and External Festivities

Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background of Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's proud history of championing inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Planners have pledged to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the 48-team competition.

The region hosts a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers concluded.
