The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term came to light a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
