In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract for the power-hitting player.

The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking fourth through 10th.
- An identical bonus for being named the top rookie honor.
His deal provides that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to represent the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he hit a tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The power hitter is scheduled to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
