Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to adapt to the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager desires Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about harnessing it in the right way. Personal talent is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about valuing the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover for the youngster after showing that he is willing to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and build an environment which he can channel this edge towards opponents and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in the Champions League match versus the German side this week.

The question, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the same XI, cramping the captain's game as a result.

It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”

He conceded there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?

The manager talked about one star bursting through for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a moment to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to score in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a powerful England team into an superior one.
